Counsel of the Year Awards Rules & Nominations
The Fifth Annual Media and Entertainment Counsel Awards will be presented on Friday, December 18, 2009 in the following categories:
  • Counsel of the Year
  • Rising Star
  • PwC Dan Brandhorst Deal Maker
  • Sports Counsel (works for league, team, players association or a company that creates or distributes sports content)
  • Technology and New Media Counsel
  • Labor and Personal Representation Counsel (works for labor or management)
  • Live & Location Based Entertainment Counsel Award
  • Public Service Counsel (works for government agency or non-profit)
  • Excellence In Branded Entertainment (presented jointly to a marketing executive and in-house counsel for a collaborative effort on an innovative branded marketing campaign)
  • Outstanding Entertainment & Media Law Firm
Award Rules
  1. Nominations may come from any source, including self-nomination. Nominations will open at 9 a.m. (PST) on October 1, 2009 and close at 6 p.m. (PST) on October 12, 2009.
  2. Nominees must, at the time of the nomination, be serving in the capacity of in-house counsel within an entertainment company, labor organization, league, association or public agency (as applicable).
  3. Nominators, nominees and their representatives are prohibited from directly contacting any of the judges for the purpose of soliciting their votes.
  4. After the nomination is received, the nominee will have the opportunity to accept the nomination and submit additional information that will be provided to the judges.
  5. AMEC will select no more than 5 nominees from each category to be submitted to the judges for their final selection.
  6. Previous winners may not be nominated for an award in any category.
  7. Previous nominees may be nominated in any category.
  8. Nomination Criteria:
    1. Counsel of the Year-Life time achievement award presented to a general counsel or chief legal officer who has exemplified a distinguished record of legal, management and organizational skills.
    2. Rising Star-Presented to a counsel who is under the age of 35 or has less than 10 years of combined law firm and in-house experience.
    3. Deal Maker-Presented to a counsel who has been responsible for the most noteworthy or significant transaction(s) in the year in which the award is presented.
    4. Sports Counsel- Service to a sports league, team, players association or similar organization.
    5. Technology and New Media Counsel- Presented to counsel who has displayed a high level of achievement in technology and/or new media.
    6. Labor Counsel- Presented to counsel who has shown a high level of achievement in labor relations and collective bargaining in service to management, labor organization, multi-employer bargaining group, public agency or similar organization.
    7. Hospitality/Location Based Entertainment Counsel-Presented to counsel who has achieved a high level of success in service to an organization in the field of hospitality and/or location based entertainment including restaurants, hotels, theme parks, themed retail experiences, etc.
    8. Public Service Counsel-Counsel employed by a governmental, public, quasi-public, public-private partnership or non-profit organization who has demonstrated a high level of achievement in the area of entertainment, media, and/or communication.
    9. Video and On-Line Games Counsel-Presented to counsel demonstrating high level of achievement in on-line or video games.
    10. Excellence In Branded Entertainment-Presented jointly to a marketing executive and in-house counsel for a collaborative effort on an innovative branded marketing campaign.
    11. In its discretion, AMEC may also present the Founders Distinguished Service Award
  9. Special Rules for the Outstanding Entertainment & Media Law Firm Award
    1. Any law firm wishing to be considered must accompany their nomination with an application consisting of the following:
      1. Description of the firm’s most significant achievements in 2008 which qualify it for the award.
      2. Profiles of the entertainment & media practice leaders and other key attorney personnel who were directly involved in the matters which are described in the application.
      3. The firm’s commitment to diversity as displayed in its entertainment & media practice.
      4. Letters of support from clients or organizations which have direct knowledge of the firm’s accomplishments
    2. The application may not exceed 10 letter sized pages and must be sent to Jessica@theamec.com no later than 6 pm (PST) on Friday, November 20, 2009.
